Best perfumes for spring 2017: L'Occitane, YSL, Neom Organics and more
From recent fragrance launches to much loved favourites, these are my picks for an olfactory fling this spring. Because life's too short to have just one signature scent...
L’Occitane Terre de Lumière, from €65 for 50ml
This is billed as the brand’s first gourmand scent, as well as its first Eau de Parfum. Gourmand scents can sometimes be too sweet for my nose, but this is perfectly balanced. There’s honey and almond and amber, but there’s also the freshness of bergamot and a spicy hit of pink peppercorn. It’s one of those fragrances that feels like a soft, warm embrace and you’ll wear it all spring and summer, and well into autumn, too.
While pink fruity-florals don't usually float my boat, this Paris-inspired scent has a fresh and youthful charm. It reminds me of YSL’s Baby Doll, which I loved and wore to death back in the day.
It’s loaded with sweet and juicy fruits, but the overall effect is clean, not cloying: there’s a lightness and transparency to the scent which keeps it wearable and modern. The base notes include musk, moss, cedarwood and patchouli, which add warmth and sensuality.
Clinique Calyx, €85 for 100 ml
Calyx has flown under the radar since Clinique revived it from the stable of its former sister-brand Prescriptives, and that’s a crying shame. It’s a joyful and uplifting citrusy burst that blends grapefruit and tropical fruits with deeper mossy, woody notes.
Chanel No 5 L’eau, from €90 for 50 ml
Last September saw the launch of this airy, fresh interpretation of the classic No. 5. This is transeasonal – I recommended it as a Christmas gift – but the citrus topnotes, including lemon, orange and mandarin, make it perfect for spring. I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t like this crisp and modern scent.
Neom Organics Energy Burst €59 for 49 ml
This is a similar idea to Eau Dynamisante by Clarins - a treatment fragrance designed to boost vitality and wellbeing. It includes grapefruit, to lift the spirits, rosemary for circulation and lemon, for clear, positive thinking.
Blended with 17 essential oils, the result is very uplifting; it’s almost sharp at first, but soon softens on the skin. It’s 100% natural and it’s also gender neutral. I keep it at work so it’s safe from Mr Fluff, while serving as a 3pm pick-me-up.
Molton Brown Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel €49 for 50 ml
This unisex eau de toilette smells great on men and women so, while it was a present for Himself, it's time he got a taste of his own medicine. Aquatic notes and a sexy base of cedar wood, musk and cypress makes this the perfect scent to put you in a seaside frame of mind.
