A Weekend on Lusty Beg Island, Fermanagh

Lusty Beg Island Log Cabin Resort Fermanagh

Lusty Beg Island is pretty unique. Sure, you might find this type of lakeside, log cabin resort in the Alps or North America - but here in Ireland, this 75 acre island in the Fermanagh Lakelands is a very rare gem.

I had visited before but Mr Fluff was a newbie, so when the invitation arrived, I was thrilled at the thoughts of introducing him to the joys of the island.

Regular readers of this blog will know I like my urban creature comforts – and yet, I do appreciate getting back to nature in a scenic environment. In theory, anyway.

And the beauty of Lusty Beg is that it offers the best of both worlds: rustic cosiness and charm that’s surrounded by natural beauty, but coupled with excellent facilities and service. And a kickass cocktail menu, too…

Lusty Beg Island Log Cabin Resport Fermanagh

Reached by a tiny, two-car ferry, this 75 acre island in the Fermanagh Lakelands feels nicely secluded and away from it all – a feeling that’s compounded by the lack of wifi anywhere other than the restaurant or bar -  yet it’s just down the road from the town of Enniskillen, which has all manner of attractions should you choose to explore.

Or you can do as we did, and not set foot off the island for the duration of your stay.  Between the island spa – a haven of pure luxury, complete with an outdoor hot-tub (HURRAH!), indoor pool and a steam room – and a menu of activities that includes boating, clay pigeon shooting, off road driving and simply exploring the woodlands, there’s masses to do. A standout for us was whizzing round the island on a high-speed rib - and my Voya massage with Rachel was all kinds of amazing, too.

Family-run since 1990, the resort has a really warm and friendly approach to service. Eating is a relaxed affair in the restaurant or bar and the grub is great; the chef served up one of the finest curries I have ever enjoyed.

There’s a great mix of accommodation on offer on the island, from 4 star stone courtyard cottages and lakeside log cabins, available on a B&B basis, to 3 star self-catering lodges and chalets. To our delight we were housed in a cabin, called the Heron Apartment which, just by chance, was right next door to some of our best bloggy buds, Cherry Sue and Corina (Stone Travel) - and we had an interlinking door between our gaffs! Cue much hilarity, laughter, amazing company and a cocktail or two over the course of what was an all-round wonderful weekend.

Want to see some of the island on film? Check out this wee video I made on a previous trip!

Disclaimer: Fluff and Fripperies was an invited guest of the resort. Current special offers include  a couples package with 2 nights in a lakeside cabin and a couples seaweed bath treatment with complimentary use of the steam room, sauna, pool, spa gardens and outdoor hot tub, for £225.
