If you only treat yourself to one makeup buy this autumn, make it something from Chanel's Le Rouge Collection No 1. It's the debut collection from make-up artist Lucia Pica - and it’s worth every second of the two-year wait, since she took over from Peter Philips as head of makeup at Chanel.
The collection is an homage to the colour red, a favourite of Mademoiselle Chanel’s, and a colour that, in makeup, speaks of classic glamour and elegance. This collection, though, is anything but classic: it’s modern and bold, while being incredibly wearable - and wantable - at the same time. The formulas and textures are fresh and unexpected, not to mention totally on point.
Try pairing the palette with Éros, a metallic rouge-noir-esque liner, €25, for the perfect finishing touch. This is nowhere near as scary as it sounds, and again, the formula is excellent. I’m wearing it here on both the upper and lower waterline and along my upper lashline; next time, I’ll be trying it with a chocolate brown liner, too, for added definition.
Another really interesting piece is the Le Vernis Nail gloss in Rouge Radical, a beautiful, high-shine jelly effect polish with a slight transparency, but oodles of colour on the nail. This is my second nail gloss from the brand (remember that beautiful purple version that came out with the spring collection?) and I am keeping everything crossed that more of these beauties will be coming our way.
Red lipstick is a little less unexpected and here we get five gorgeous options, along with one nude, Rouge Ingénue, for balance; they’re all €34. What I didn't expect was that, of the six lip options, no less than four are Rouge Allure Velvet Mattes, which just happens to be my favourite Chanel lipstick formula. Hell, it just happens to be my favourite lipstick formula, full stop. I gravitated immediately to the soft orangey-red Rouge Feu, which I’m wearing in these pictures, and it swanned right into first place on my Most Wonderful Lipsticks of Life list.
Two new shades of Illusion D’Ombre, €31, a blusher, two lip liners and a maroon mascara, Subversif, round out the collection. Did I mention it’s all on counter now?
