While I’ve been distracted with other shiny new beauty launches, it seems that Estee Lauder has been quietly innovating like crazy with its formulas and textures - as this little trio of recent releases nicely shows. We’ve got a liquid compact, a powder shadow in a stick and a new matte version of their gorgeous Pure Colour Envy Sculpting lipstick - say what?
Let’s start with the liquid compact: Double Wear Makeup To Go, €42, is a fuss-free new foundation that can be applied in a flash. It’s a liquid foundation with all the convenience of a compact: just press once for a light touch, and twice for more coverage.
Coverage is lighter and fresher than the double wear moniker might have you believe – I’ve never tried the light version but I imagine this finish has more in common with that than with the original (and if you’ve tried both, please let me know if I’m wrong!).
Germophobes might not like the little sponge, but personally, I’m loving the convenience of it for on the go. I’m also enjoying its moisture boosting properties - it contains a triple whammy of hyaluronic acid, glycerin and muru muru butter to help with your skin’s hydration – and there's 10 shades in the range, so you’ve a good chance of finding your match.
Released at the end of last year, the Magic Smoky Powder Shadow Sticks, €22.50, are another interesting product: you get the speed and ease of a cream shadow stick, with the finish of a regular powder. For a fast, smoky eye, you won’t find much better than the darker shades: just line your eyes heavily, and blend out.
I have Indigo Smoke, which I’m wearing here; Cool Ash – a smoky grey with gold flecks – and Slow Burn, a gorgeous looking bronze, are practically screaming my name from Brown Thomas. Now I’m a bit more confused by the paler ones; what’s smoky about a pastel pink or shimmery aqua eye? Although, apparently, you can layer them up with your regular powder shadows, so that might work, but personally I think I’ll stick to the dark side.
Finally, Furious, €31, is a bright and beautiful creamy coral (it’s described as a neon, but don’t let that put you off!). The new, modern matte formula is a total winner: soft, smooth, creamy and intensely pigmented, with a very light scent and a good six hour wear-time. If anything, I like this even more than the original Pure Colour Envy Sculpting formula – and that’s saying a lot.
What I really love about all three of these products is how quickly and easily they allow you to put together a polished look. The new formulas aren’t gimmicky in the slightest; on the contrary, they do all the hard work for you and let you get on with having a fabulous time and not worrying a bit about your makeup. Now who amongst us can’t get on board with that?
