There are things I start to lament each year as autumn draws near. Why have I not sat out in more beer gardens, swum in more oceans, worn more colouredy eyeliner and mascara? But other things make up for it: things like new season lipstick and eyeshadow. Because I’ve said it before and will say it again, but autumn is THE BEST season for makeup lovers, and all the gorgeous new collections are hitting counter now.
As ever, Chanel’s autumn edit is one of the best in class. Inspired by the changing colours of the season, the Les Automnales collection offers up a gorgeous array of rich shades and textures that are directly inspired by nature: think khaki, copper and chocolatey browns, illuminated by metallic flashes of bronze and gold.
I’m in love with the utter sophistication of the campaign visual but what I’m really mad about with this collection is that it’s so wearable – the colours are universally flattering and the quality is divine; eyeshadows are richly pigmented, lips can be satin or glossy or matte, and there really is something for everyone. Here it is in action on the gorgeous model at the launch:
Lightly swatched below is the new Rouge Allure Velvet - one of my all-time favourite lipstick formulations - in La Bouleversante, a rich brickish red, alongside Rouge Allure in Pensive, a pretty peachy nude. Two lovely balmy shades of Rouge Coco Shine have also been released, one red and one nude (all the lippies are €32.50) along with one Glossimer, €27.50, in the shimmery reddish coral, Chene Rouge.
There are two eyeshadow palettes: firstly, the limited edition Entrelacs, €56, with five matte and satin shadows in shades of gold, beige and brown. It’s lovely (that's it in the very first picture), but my heart is entirely taken by the latest quad, Les 4 Ombres in Tissé d’Automne, €50. With two shades of khaki, a copper and a peach, this is one I can’t wait to get on my eyelids. I’ve seen this in action at the press launch and I can tell you the payoff is fantastic: the shades glide on like a water colour and the peachy pink shade gives the loveliest natural highlight colour.
Also exciting for eyes: four new shades of Stylo Yeux Waterproof liner (€24), one of which, the limited edition Ardent – a beautiful shimmering copper – manages to do the most wonderful things to all eye colours. I’m a fan of these pencils because not only do they last all day without budging, even on the waterline, but they have a handy little sharpener in the lid.

What do you think, feeling happier about autumn yet? I know I am…
