Seriously, lads, why did nobody tell me? Oh sure, I’d heard about Aviary Lane as one of the city's top hair salons, and admired their work atop Kirstie’s fabliss head, but till they invited me in this week I had NO IDEA that the place is so jaw-droppingly aesthetically pleasing.
The salon is a treasure trove of interiors inspiration with beautiful and/or interesting pieces almost everywhere you look. Parts of it are decidedly mid-century modernist, which is probably my favourite interior style; other parts are opulent and baroque. The colour scheme is dark and moody in places, bright and airy in others. To call it eclectic is putting it mildly: the vibe is a little bit split-personality, and a whole lot fabulous.
Downstairs, you have various hair stations adorned with ornate mirrors, pendant lighting and decorative bird cages, all overlooked by a cardboard taxidermy deer head. Upstairs, the walls are a gloriously moody grey/blue, which serves as the perfect backdrop to an eclectic collection of teapots, skulls, paperweights, bird statues and more. The makeup room has a riotous ‘wall of inspiration’, while the front of house is predominantly white, and light-flooded.
The service was impeccable and I was delighted with my blow-dry – and the little extras, like a head massage and ice-cold beer – but if I’m honest, it’s the sheer beauty of this salon that will draw me back. Check out their website for more, or have a peek at what else is inspiring me in the homeware department.
