Knockranny: The Best of The West

Spa Salveo Knockranny House Hotel

Knockranny’s Spa Salveo is a firm favourite of mine and my bestie, Jo’s, and we’re fully determined to haul our fellas along on our next trip. While the soothing Roman-style vitality pool might not be incentive enough for the boys, we reckon the lure of the Great Western Greenway – Ireland’s longest off-road walking and cycling trail – will prove impossible to resist.

Knockranny House is perfectly situated for exploring the Greenway, which follows the old Westport to Achill railway line that closed in 1937. And it makes a lovely and luxurious base from which to venture out, explore, and most importantly, retreat back to once the adventuring is over.

Now neither Jo nor I can actually ride a bicycle, strange as that is to fathom, so on our most recent trip we left the rest of the group to enjoy the 29k ride from Westport to Mulranny, while we laced up our walking boots instead. After a delightful ramble, taking in the gorgeous mountain views, we arrived back at the hotel with time to shower and change before a delicious and well-earned afternoon tea.

I won’t even tell you how many scones I scoffed because, hello, guilt free! That is, until the exhausted cyclists came back and rejoined the group, still decked out in their lycra attire…

Then it was on to the best bit: the Knockranny Greenway treatment in Spa Salveo, an inspired one and a half-hour ritual designed to soothe sore muscles and promote a complete sense of relaxation. Kicking off with a mineral-infused foot soak and exfoliation, with peppermint and wild orange to invigorate tired feet and legs, the treatment also includes a full body massage with Doterra’s soothing Deep Blue Rub (Doterra, meaning ‘gift of the earth’, is a gorgeous range of products carried the spa, which uses the world's highest-quality essential oils).

The great thing about Knockranny is that it offers up the very best of what the West of Ireland has to offer: between the stunning scenery, giant bedrooms, truly delicious local food and the warm and welcoming staff, you’ll understand why we like to have our next trip planned before check-out!

The hotel’s Greenway Getaway package includes two nights cosy accommodation for two adults and two children (under 10) with a hearty breakfast each morning and bicycle and helmet hire for one day with a delicious packed picnic lunch. The Greenway Getaway package is available from €185 per person (children under 10 stay for free!) and the 90-minute Greenway Recovery treatment can be added for an extra €100 per person. Fluff and Fripperies was a guest of the hotel; for more info, check out the website here.
