Sales shopping is one of this month’s few pleasures but, though I looked far and wide, I found nothing to tickle my pickle (or suit my tiny budget). What I did have though was persistence and an Arnotts Christmas voucher which allowed me to swoop in just at the end of the sales, to snap up this Raoul hexagon tote bag - for 70% off the original price. I know!
Marked down from a whopping €598 to €178, with the voucher this cost me just €78 for a lovely, versatile day bag made from Italian leather and calf suede, that's roomy enough to hold all my work essentials and casual enough for weekend wear. There’s a carry strap as well as a shoulder strap and I love the gold hardware; it’s not your typical brassy or yellowy gold but a paler, cooler tone.
The bag was also available in black (and there is a black with brown suede version reduced on the Raoul website) but I went for steel; I usually carry a black or brown bag through winter (this one is my favourite) but as we move towards spring, I love a bit of grey. Not just because it matches the Irish spring skies (a sad, but true. fact), but because it’s a subtle, understated and elegant colour that goes with pretty much everything. My current one, from H&M, features mock-croc with suede panels and has served me well – but has definitely seen better days. This one is the perfect replacement and feels sturdy and durable; with a bit of TLC it should be with me for many springs to come.
Arnotts stocks lots of lovely bits and pieces from Raoul, which is the fashion and leather goods brand from the house of Singapore-based F J Benjamin; check out some of my favourites from the Arnotts SS15 Fashion Show.
Did you bag a bargain in this year’s January sales?
