May Favourites: A First on Fluff and Fripperies! Feat. Sally Hansen, Dior, Maybelline, MAC, Bourjois, ELF, Liz Earle and The Konjac Sponge
It's hard for me to keep track of whether I've told you about all of the things I'm loving at the moment, so I thought I’d do my very first favourites post. Let me know if you like it – I might make it a regular feature. Here are the products that are currently rocking my world:

I love a good bit of alt electro-pop, and Irish band Sleep Thieves do just that.
Building on their 2011 debut album, Heart Waves, the trio release Islands, a 5 track EP, this month. I’m no music critic but Nialler9 is, so check out what he made of it.
Islands will launch at a special gig in Dublin this Thursday, 31st May, at the Workman’s Club and admission is free. It’s a great chance to see Sleep Thieves do what they do best - The Ticket called them "A force to be reckoned with live" – and catch Kid Karate (yes, from Fade Street, I wonder have they lived that down?!) and Garret Moore at the same time.
You can listen to Oceans, one of the tracks from the new EP, here.
The show kicks off at 8.30pm. See you there?
We’re enjoying some uncharacteristically sunny weather here in
If you follow me on Twitter you might have seen me tweeting about this last Friday. Right in time for the weekend, this limited edition Smirnoff pack arrived. It not only gives me the chance to whip up a few cocktails, but celebrates the latest album from the Queen of Pop, Her Madgesty herself.
I was delighted to find this fabulous Australian brand in Boots and couldn't wait to tell you all about it! I’ve used whitening toothpastes in the past and haven’t noticed too much difference. And they tend to be expensive, so I’ve never repurchased any particular brand. But this product is different.
White Glo launched in the
a couple of years back and I was recently sent a tube by More magazine – I’m part of their beauty panel, and they occasionally send us products for feedback. Until I found it in Boots I wasn't sure you could get it in UK , but I'm so happy you can. Ireland
Sweet like candy: Maybelline Colorsensational Popsticks, Avon Shine Attract Lipstick and Clarins Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balm
|Top to bottom: Maybelline, Clarins, Avon|
Lately I'm loving this trio of candy inspired lip treats that have landed on my desk. Perfect for summer, these all promise to be hydrating and comfortable to wear, while delivering a glossy tint to the lips while they're at it. And it doesn't hurt that they all remind me of jellies and lollipops, either...
Irish highstreet favourite Dunnes Stores is offering this lovely little promotion - buy any two Garnier Ambre Solaire sun protection products at half price - including aftersun but excluding lip balm and 50 ml packs - and sort out your summer reading for free, while you're at it. Dunnes Stores are giving away a copy of Marian's last novel, The Brightest Star in the Sky.
I've read it - I'm a massive fan and agree with comments that Marian Keyes is the Jane Austen of our times. This is wonderfully observed and does what Marian does best, combining laugh-out-loud comedy with serious issues and emotions.
The offer is valid until 11th June, while stocks last.
I have much love for Eurovision hopefuls Jedward but I never thought we’d have too much in common. How wrong I was! I was tickled to hear that the twins share my love for Irish seaweed skincare brand VOYA, and recently enjoyed a soak in their Sligo bath house. Sez John, in his own inimitable way, “I feel like my whole body is more ‘slimetised’, more relaxed, more soft, more cool, better.”
Don't worry, this video is nowhere near as disturbing as Jexy And I Know It - I'm still traumatised!

Who doesn't appreciate a rich, luxurious shower gel? Well, Mr Fluff, for starters. Far from appreciating the boost a fancy foam can give to body and soul, he's happy to lather up using any old body wash that's on offer at the supermarket.
Now, if you're a regular reader of this blog, it might not surprise you that I don't agree! My preference is for something that won't dry out my skin and will offer me a little bit of everyday luxury. But with this pick of the week I think we've finally found a compromise - a luxurious gel-to-foam product that smells and feels indulgent but won't break the bank. The scent is warm, invigorating and, crucially, unisex and we're both big fans of the foaming texture.
Rituals Sunrise Sweet Orange and Cedar Shower Foam is available from Arnotts for €7.90. It's slightly on the expensive side for a shower gel but hey, if it makes mornings less miserable then it's a price that we're happy to pay!
Have you tried any of the foaming shower gels in this range?
The first thing I thought when I clapped eyes on the summer collection from Irish high street favourite A|wear was, "God, I need to book a holiday".
Followed closely by, "If only I could pay for it."
Well those clever peeps at A|wear have clearly anticipated this, because they've gone and teamed up with Sunway Travel to offer you €100 off your summer holiday when you spend €50 instore.
And once that little detail is sorted, A|wear's summer collection has everything you need for your break, from cute beach cover ups and bikinis to maxi dresses, shorts and t-shirts and embellished sandals.
For more on the Sunway Travel offer just ask in store for details or check out www.awear.com. Hurry though, because the offer's only available for the month of May.
Are you heading anywhere nice this year?
Liz Earle’s Cleanse & Polish is my holy grail of cleansers – and I’m not alone. The iconic product has won legions of fans, accolades and awards since it was first introduced way back in 1995.
And no wonder - it’s gentle but effective, suitable for every age and skin type, and packed full of natural active ingredients like rosemary, chamomile, eucalyptus and cocoa butter. It feels rich and creamy and the muslin cloth exfoliates as well as cleanses, while boosting the circulation of the skin. It’s gorgeous stuff.
Most recently, it was voted most Revolutionary Beauty Product of the Last 20 Years by 600 independent beauty industry 'insiders' at the recent CEW (UK) Awards 2012 – known as the Oscars of the beauty industry. It also scooped the award for Best Cleanser at the recent Sunday Times Style Beauty Awards.
To celebrate, the brand are rolling back the years, by selling the 100ml bottle of Cleanse & Polish at its original launch price of €11.25 (the price includes two muslin cloths). This is a saving of €5.75 on the current price of €17. The offer launches today and runs until Friday – or while stocks last. It’s available online until Friday 25th May, or while stocks last. You can also call the Customer Centre on 0044 1983 813913.
For fellow fans, this is a chance to stock up and for newbies, it’s a chance to try out a cult classic at a special price, to see what all the fuss is about!
Will you be picking up a bottle (or two)?
|Bobbi Brown Miami Collection|
Bobbi Brown's summer collection looks delish: inspired, apparently, by the fresh, glowing look you get at the beach, this is a collection of shimmery bronzes and nudes that perfectly captures the essence of summer.
The collection, called Miami, includes four metallic longwear cream shadows, €24, a shimmering fragrance oil for €42 and four new, limited edition Treatment Lip Shines - also €24.
This weekend I was invited to take part in an exercise class with a difference - a high energy zumba session that was also a chance to put Sure Maximum Protection through its paces.
I hadn't tried this particular brand of deodorant before - it’s a twist-up cream that I lashed on after my shower the morning of the class. Had I bothered to read the box, I'd have seen that this isn't actually what you're advised to do with the product - it's intended for use at night before bed, giving the anti-perspirant time to get to work on your sweat glands before you get up in the morning.
So it was with some trepidation that I set about lepping and stomping and high kicking my way through the zumba class. We'd also been sent a grey tshirt to wear, so any sweaty betty incidents would really stand out and it would be totally obvious that I can't even apply deodorant in the correct fashion...
But I needn't have worried. Despite a pretty hardcore session - which was also brilliant craic - and despite not having worn the product overnight or in the recommended way, Sure Maximum Protection still came through for me. I didn't show myself up by sweating through my grey tshirt and I was able to get changed and head for a lovely lunch with the rest of the group, without worrying I'd be putting them off their food!Sure Maximum Protection is pretty much the bomb and if you're any sort of athlete, gym bunny or sports enthusiast then this will make your life a whole lot easier. Thumbs up!
This comes in three varieties - confident, regular and sensitive. The RRP is €6.87.
I love a full brow and enjoyed this quick 10 minute how-to from Pixiwoo, demo-ing three specific brow looks. They’ve recommended some great products in the video but, if you’re counting the pennies like me, I can also tip the nod to the lash & brow gel mascara from Essence, the stencils from ELF and the Rimmel brow pencils as great budget alternatives. Enjoy!

Lilac Charm from Maybelline's Forever Strong Pro Porcelain Collection Gives Amazing Wear Time, Even On My Rubbish Chip-Prone Nails!
Leaving everything else to one side, I've been blown away by the wear time of Lilac Charm, the first polish I've tried from Maybelline's latest collection, Forever Strong Pro Porcelain. The press release that arrived with my bottle focuses exclusively on the shade range and doesn't even mention formula or wear time, so this has taken me by complete surprise and exceeded all of my expectations. Don't you love it when that happens?!
These pictures were taken after five days wear and the polish is perfect. Today it's been on my fingers for SEVEN DAYS and there's just a little bit of tipwear on one or two nails. And I'm not even wearing an anti-chip topcoat, just a fast drying one, so this is all down to Lilac Charm's incredible tenacity and staying power.
These are out now, and they're €5.99. There are four other 'sugared almond' shades in the collection, and I plan to collect them all.
If you've tried these, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME SOONER?!
|Clarins Colour Quench Lip Balms in Strawberry Sorbet, Delhi Nude and Sweet Papaya - I'm wearing Delhi Nude in the photo.|
Last year I wore Strawberry Sorbet and Sweet Papaya from the Clarins Colour Quench Lip Balm range pretty much all summer long. I recently got my hands on Delhi Nude, out now as part of the brand's Indian inspired Enchanted Summer collection, and I fell in love with these glosses all over again.
I'd go so far as to say they're my favourite glosses ever, and here's why:
- they're a gloss/balm hybrid, so they're non sticky with a lovely texture, but they still look lovely and glossy on the lips
- the colours are really pretty - there are 8 shades in the range with a further two released as part of this summer's collection
- they all have the same delicious fruity taste and smell
- they're moisturising and care for your lips, with ingredients like mango oil, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E
- at 15 ml, they're massive, and they're better value than ever. Last year they retailed at €20, and this year, Delhi Nude and Jaipur Pink are priced at €17.79.
Have you tried these, and what's your favourite gloss of all time?
I might have mentioned once or oh, about a thousand times that my skin has been a bit problematic for the past year or so. It's oily on the tzone, prone to breakouts round my chin and dehydrated everywhere else. Basically, it's been a right drag and I am always on the lookout for products or treatments that will help.
So when L'Occitane sent me this duo of products they recently added to the Angelica line, it was like they'd been reading my mind. The Instant Hydration Mask and Exfoliating Gel have been part of my skincare routine for the past few weeks and have really helped to balance out my skin.
Clinique's Chubby Sticks have got to be one of my favourite products from the brand. Shaped like a chunky crayon, these colourful balms are the cutest items of makeup around. The names endearingly play on the chubby theme - think Fuller Fig, Whole Lotta Honey or my current favourite, Chunky Cherry, seen in the pictures above.
They're great performers too, adding moisture as well as a sheer, but (moderately) buildable, wash of colour. The formula is a nourishing blend of emollients and antioxidants like shea and mango seed butters with jojoba seed oil, and the packaging is clever as well as playful - just twist the base to reveal more product. So I was delighted with the news that Clinique are doubling the current range by introducing a further 8 shades, from nudes to oranges, pinks, fuchsia and violet.
The new shades will include:
- Bountiful Blush
- Heaping Hazelnut
- Curvy Candy
- Mighty Mimosa
- Voluptuous Violet
- Pudgy Peony
- Two Ton Tomato
I love a bit of Catrice so today I thought I'd take a quick look at the next limited edition collection coming down the line. Out in July, the Coolibri collection is inspired by the iridescent colours of the coolibri hummingbird. What that translates to is a nice bright colour palette for eyes and nails, set off by softer shades on the lips.
Finally, a high street collaboration I am genuinely interested in. The Guardian's Fashion Statement tells me that the delightfully eccentric Anna Dello Russo, famed for being Vogue Japan's Fashion Director At Large - and wearing outfits that are, frankly, mental - is designing for H&M. The collection will focus on accessories including sunglasses, jewellery, shoes, bags and, bizarrely, a suitcase, and land in stores at the beginning of October.
I don't know about you, but I have no idea what to expect... and I find that kind of exciting.
I'm a total self tan newbie. Search the site and the only piece on tanning you'll find is a recent 'Made in
So it was a fortunate coincidence that I was invited to catch up with James Harknett, Garnier's Body & Tanning Expert, on a recent trip to Ireland. James has been immersed in the self-tanning world for more than 10 years, working with the biggest brands and names in the industry as well as bronzing up the stars on TV shows like X Factor and The Brit Awards. What better man to answer my questions?

The site is an absolute mecca for those seeking accessories to reflect their individual style. There's a wide range of pieces which are unique, stylish and on-trend, often with a bit of an edge.

|Bling layered over Tom Ford's Bitter Bitch. Sparkly!|
See, I told you I have a weakness for great glitters! I was so instantly enamoured with this pretty polish that I slapped it on just minutes after purchasing it. This lovely rose gold shade is called Bling, and is part of Look Magazine's makeup range (yep, really! Check out this post for the lowdown and to see what else I bought when I was back in

I had a lot of fun with beauty blogger and makeup maestro Sarah Lanagan recently, playing with Artdeco’s Colour Mania collection.
Sarah created a great statement look using most of the colours in the collection - head over to Beaut.ie to take a look. But she also showed me that strong, bright colours can actually be used to create a look that’s pretty wearable - so keep reading if you’re interested in seeing how you can make brights work for every day.
May Is Melanoma Awareness Month: Please Take A Few Moments To Watch This Video And Help Save Our Skin!
Quite an important message today, I hope you’ll agree.
May is Melanoma Awareness Month, a global initiative to promote the early detection and prevention of skin cancer. Here in Ireland, skin cancer is the most common cancer and Irish men are a particularly high risk group. Just one blistering sunburn can double your chances of developing melanoma later in life, and a staggering 90% of skin cancers are completely preventable.
Skincare specialists La Roche-Posay are behind the SOS Save Our Skin campaign to raise awareness and hopefully, get people talking about this issue.
So please, take a few minutes to watch the video, share the message and encourage your loved ones to pop on the sunscreen and regularly check skin for irregularities.
To help save Irish skin, join the SOS Save Our Skin Cause at http://www.sossaveourskin.ie/ and La Roche-Posay will make a donation on your behalf to the Melanoma Trust.
Today’s pick really brings back memories - in my secondary school, you were nobody until you had a collection of fruity lip balms from The Body Shop. Now, with their recent makeover and these new stick varieties, I’m falling for them all over again.
Well, there’s a lot to love: cute, kitsch packaging, subtle colour and shine and a delicious fruity taste, for starters. There are six sticks in strawberry, plum, pink berry, lychee, plum and pomegranate, which is the one I was given. For the traditionalists, six pots are also available in strawberry, raspberry, passionberry, watermelon, pink guava and satsuma.
The pomegranate version tastes absolutely delicious - especially, as I discovered, layered under ELF's Studio Matte Lip Colour (that I talked about here). Seriously, it's a lip smackingly good combo that has to be tried to be believed!
The Born Lippy stick balms are €4.95 and out now. What Body Shop product takes you on a trip down memory lane? Tell me in the comments!

I have about a bajillion nail polishes at this stage (it's an addiction, don't judge me!) but surprisingly few of them are glitters. Here's what''s currently in my stash:
