They seemed to spring from nowhere. When the recession had well and truly bitten and drinks with umbrellas seemed but a far-off memory, group buying sites were like manna from heaven.

Suddenly, life’s little luxuries were back within our grasp…as long as we had a coupon. And believe you me, I’ve had a coupon or two: weekends away, haircuts, massages, meals out - I’ve enjoyed them all, thanks to a cheeky little internet deal.

Arguably the biggest and best of these sites is Groupon, which launched in November 2008 and features a deal-of-the-day with great offers on things to eat, do, see and buy in a variety of cities around the world. In just three years, Groupon has grown into a 15 billion dollar company that has revolutionised the way we buy.

I'm very fond of my daily Groupon email; each deal is presented with a quirky humour that makes it fun and engaging to read. The last one I bought, for a foot care treatment, enticed me in with this opening line: Without feet, tap shoes couldn't dance, millipedes would be worms, and inches wouldn't know when to stop.
