Purple is BIG NEWS again this Autumn/Winter but it’s a shade I’ve always found a little tricky, especially on the eyes. I own a few purple eye-shadows but rarely wear them as I think they make me look not dissimilar to having two black eyes when I do. So I was delighted when I was sent this Yves Saint Laurent eye pencil to try out as it seemed like an easier way for me to buy into the purple trend. Other than that I didn’t give it much more thought, thinking something along the lines of ‘an eyeliner is an eyeliner is an eyeliner’.
YSL Dessin Du Regard Long-lasting Waterproof Eye Pencil in Shimmering Burgundy: Review, Swatches and first FOTD!
But I was wrong.
This eye pencil surprised and impressed me in a number of ways. Firstly, I was surprised by the colour, because it’s much darker and less reddish toned than the name suggests. It’s more like a smoky amethyst, which is fabulous because it’s so right now. The shimmer is very subtle, which I liked. I was also surprised by the rich, creamy formulation and how easy this was to apply. I loved the colour and how it looked on my eyes but the biggest surprise was when I looked in the mirror about 4 hours after application, expecting at least a little bit of smudging, to find it looking perfectly intact, as if just freshly applied. And when I checked a few hours later, it looked exactly the same. And again a few hours after that! This, to me, is unheard of with a pencil, especially as I had applied it thickly and on both my top and bottom lashline. Oh, and I’d also been out in the rain!
Costing €25 for a pencil plus sharpener, this is also available in Black Ink, Patent Leather (deep brown), Ultramarine and Amazon Green. I highly recommend.
Now I’m going to end this post with a first for Fluff and Fripperies…my very first FOTD! Some of you requested this when I asked what you’d like to see more of on this site. Please do bear in mind that despite my fondness for makeup I don’t think I’m particularly good at applying the stuff and am just an enthusiastic amateur! But here’s what I wore yesterday for a big girly Sunday brunch in town.
Face: Clarins Everlasting foundation; Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer; Bourjois Eclat Mineral Pressed Powder; Bourjois blush in #33 Lilas D'or; The Body Shop Honey Bronze Bronzing Powder in Shade #4 (contour).
Eyes: Nude and medium purple shades from Estee Lauder quad in Berry Quartz; Yves Saint Laurent Dessin Du Regard Long-lasting Waterproof Eye Pencil in Shimmering Burgundy; La Roche Posay Respectissime Waterproof mascara in black; Rimmel Professional Eyebrown Pencil in Dark Brown.
Lips: Avon Colordisiac lipstick in Drawn To You
Nails: NOTD coming up soon!
Have you tried these eye pencils and what did you think?

Sha'up, you're no makeup amateur, sister! Your makeup looks mighty fine, naturally enhancing your beauty:D! Love these posts, keep them on a roll, and how gorgeous is that YSL? Fab!
xoxo
You look beautiful! And you looked beautiful when you arrived for brunch yesterday, despite the hassle getting there!
I think FOTD is a great idea. It's much better seeing the products in action IYKWIM?
Ah thanks guys, I found this oddly terrifying but I do like seeing these posts on other blogs!
I also like your face of the day, although partly because I like your face in general. I am torn about these posts. I used to love them 100%, then I started DOING them, felt like a bit of an idiot, and now look at them and feel kind of like, "I still love them but don't know if I want you to feel like an idiot the way I did" IYKWIM?! Anyway you look laffly and I don't think you're a make-up amateur. But that's coming from a SERIOUS make-up amateur.
Amateur shmamateur, you've done courses and everything! I get what you're saying Rosemary and I'm a little afraid of feeling like an idiot too but I'm just gonna hope for the best...
You look great and the lippie really suits you.
I get terrified everytime I decide to do an FOTD post cos I am a serious make up amateur but I like doing them at the same time, if that makes sense.
As for the YSL eye liner, it's fabulous and I want it.
Thanks Paula, I was really impressed with the liner and would like to try out the green and the black shades from the line as well.
You look fab and I love these types of posts!!!
love the eyes emma...and this photo of you is really pretty! Loving the Clarins foundation too! hope you had a good girly day out xx
dang i thought i left a comment yesterday, obvs not :) you look gorgeous emma, love the liner, gonna get one too, its the exact colour i'm on the hunt for too, black can be too harsh sometimes. more face photos!!!
I think it's great to see your 'real person' face with the make-up instead of airbrushed models. Gives a much better impression of what can be done - v. inspiring so keep it up!

Oo I love a face of the day I can't stop giggling when I try to take a picture of myself ... I love that the eyeliner has a sharpener
Thanks everyone and Mags I'm the exact same, it is so weird trying to take a photo of your makeup! Love the fact that it comes with a sharpener too.
